A consistent practice in either Pilates or the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® yields noticeable, worthwhile benefits. Clients at The Movement Studio are encouraged to try and be familiar with both methods, and, after time, will be able to assess which method best befits them. Many clients maintain practices in both!

The marked differences and similarities of the two methods are as follows:

Pilates

  • A predominantly linear, two-dimensional movement.

  • Focused on body alignment.

  • The strength, stability and mobility of the spine is addressed in every class.

  • Resistance and assistance on the equipment comes from springs.

GYROTONIC® and

GYROKINESIS® Method

  • A predominantly circular, three-dimensional movement.

  • Fluid, continual motion is used to produce a strength and mobility that is graceful in quality.

  • All spinal motions will be explored in every class.

  • Incorporates the concept of your energetic self in affecting movement.

  • Resistance and support on the equipment come from a pulley system with free weights.

BOTH:

  • Increase the “core” strength of the body
(deep abdominals, diaphragm, pelvic floor and deep muscles of the back).

  • Increase whole body strength and flexibility.

  • Involve exercises both on equipment and on the floor.

  • Improve coordination and balance.

  • Are applicable for individuals of all ability levels.

  • Will help to prevent injury in other sports and daily life.

  • Will improve athletic performance in all other sports.

  • Positively affect overall happiness and well-being.

  • Are so much fun!

Emma

Emma Kumley

Emma Kumley is the owner of The Movement Studio and has been a movement educator for over 25 years. She is a third-generation Pilates Instructor and NCPT (Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher) through the Pilates Method Alliance, the only certifying body of Pilates instructors in the United States. Emma is also a certified trainer in the GYROTONIC® Method. Her passion for movement education takes her to multiple continuing education courses per year, keeping her teaching perspective fresh and the joy that she has for her work constantly renewed.

Emma’s love of movement began in childhood, as a ballet and modern dance student. From there, Emma began teaching aerobics, step aerobics, spinning, and body toning classes. After high school, she continued teaching movement classes throughout undergraduate and graduate studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. She credits her constant involvement in teaching movement as the steadying force that kept her head on straight through many late nights of studying and writing papers.

After graduating from Case Law with her JD, Emma and her husband moved to Florida and she started working as an attorney in Tampa. She missed teaching movement classes so much that she dove back into movement education as soon as possible and began working as a lawyer by day, aerobics instructor by night!

One relocation to central Florida and three kids later, Emma was introduced to Pilates. What immediately struck her about the method was how intelligent and focused it is, and she found herself paying attention to things in her body that she’d never given too much thought to. It was this introspection through movement that sparked Emma’s love for Pilates, and her training came soon thereafter. She continues to marvel at the brilliance of the Pilates method and how it can be applied to every single body, regardless of age, size, or athletic ability.

After one more baby, Emma met the GYROTONIC® Method while on vacation in Colorado. It was love at first spiral and her passion for the work embodied by the GYROTONIC® Method continues to grow on a daily basis. Her training in the GYROTONIC® Method has allowed Emma to see the body and its capability for movement with greater depth and appreciation.

Emma is continuously thankful for the clients who teach her on a daily basis and she is a firm believer that movement is one of the best ways to invite joy into your life! She is an advocate for moving however, and whenever, you can!
